2.4 The I-Service Configuration Panel

I-Services are applications associated with your XRI. The three common i-services are as follows:

  • Authentication: This i-service allows you to use your XRI as an OpenID, which is a decentralized identity technology. Many major websites already allow you to log in with OpenID, e.g. LiveJournal, AOL, Yahoo and many others.
  • Contact Page: A contact page allows people to send you messages without the need of exposing your e-mail address. This is a great way for reducing spam and exerting detailled control over the messages you want to receive. Normally the contact page of an XRI is reachable under the path /(+contact), but it can be configured to be the default service as well (i.e. then it will appear when people simply enter your XRI without anything else).
  • Forwarding: The forwarding i-service redirects people to URLs which you can define. This i-service includes one or more mappings which associate a path with a URL. For example, common mappings include to redirect the path /(+blog) to the URL of your weblog, or to redirect /(+call) to the URL of a skype address; however, these mappings are completely arbitrary and you can define any mapping you like. The path of a mapping can also be empty; in this cas you define the URL for a default resolution request to your XRI, i.e. when people simply enter your XRI without any path at all.

Our i-service configuration panel allows you set up various options in these i-services. You can also completely delete i-services and add new ones; for example you could have multiple contact pages and enable/disable them whenever you need them. However, adding and deleting i-services requires a certain understanding of how XRI resolution works, so it is not recommended for beginners. Normally, you should let the XRI wizard (see page 2.3) set up your i-services.
